Severity Medium (CVSS 5.3)
CWE 862
Vulnerable Version 4.9
Patched Version
Disclosed March 19, 2026

Analysis Overview

Atomic Edge analysis of CVE-2026-3506 (metadata-based):
This vulnerability is a Missing Authorization flaw in the WP-Chatbot for Messenger plugin up to version 4.9. Unauthenticated attackers can overwrite the plugin’s MobileMonkey API token and company ID configuration options. This allows attackers to hijack the site’s chatbot configuration and redirect visitor conversations to attacker-controlled accounts.

Atomic Edge research indicates the root cause is a missing capability check on a WordPress AJAX handler or admin POST endpoint. The plugin likely registers a function to handle configuration updates via wp_ajax_nopriv_ or admin_post_nopriv_ hooks. This function directly processes update_option() or update_site_option() calls without verifying the user has administrative privileges. The CWE-862 classification confirms this authorization bypass pattern. These conclusions are inferred from the vulnerability description and WordPress plugin architecture patterns, not confirmed via source code review.

Exploitation requires sending a POST request to either /wp-admin/admin-ajax.php or /wp-admin/admin-post.php. The action parameter likely contains a value like wp_chatbot_save_settings or similar. Attackers must include parameters named mobilemonkey_api_token and mobilemonkey_company_id with values pointing to their own MobileMonkey account. No authentication cookies or nonce tokens are required. The attack vector is network-based with no user interaction required.

Remediation requires adding proper capability checks before processing configuration updates. The plugin should verify current_user_can(‘manage_options’) or check_admin_referer() with a valid nonce. The vulnerable endpoint should be registered only for authenticated administrators by using wp_ajax_ prefix without _nopriv. These fixes align with WordPress security best practices for authorization.

Successful exploitation redirects all chatbot conversations to attacker-controlled MobileMonkey accounts. This compromises customer service interactions and potentially exposes sensitive user information shared via chat. Attackers could impersonate the organization, phish users, or intercept support requests. The configuration hijack persists until legitimate administrators discover and revert the changes.
