Atomic Edge analysis of CVE-2026-42658:
This vulnerability is a Stored Cross-Site Scripting (XSS) in the Classified Listing plugin for WordPress, versions up to and including 5.3.8. The flaw resides in the Ajax controllers, where multiple functions lack proper authorization checks and input sanitization. This allows an unauthenticated attacker to inject arbitrary web scripts into pages, which execute when any user accesses the injected content. The CVSS score is 7.2 (High).

Root Cause:
The root cause is the absence of capability checks and insufficient input sanitization in several AJAX handler functions across multiple files. In `AjaxCFG.php`, the `edit_field_delete`, `edit_field_choose`, and `edit_field_insert` functions previously only checked a nonce but did not verify the user’s capability (`manage_rtcl_options`). The `edit_field_delete` function passed the `$_REQUEST[‘id’]` parameter directly to `get_post()` without sanitization or validation that the ID belongs to a valid custom field post type. In `AjaxSettings.php`, the `save_setting_options` and `getMediaById` functions combined nonce verification and capability checking in a single conditional, allowing an attacker who could bypass the nonce check to execute the code without proper authorization. The `Import.php` file’s `rtcl_import_listing` method parsed raw POST data (`$_POST[‘rows’]`) as JSON without sanitization or validation, and processed field mappings without checking user permissions. These combined issues allow an unauthenticated user to call these AJAX actions and inject malicious scripts.

Exploitation:
An unauthenticated attacker sends a crafted HTTP POST request to `/wp-admin/admin-ajax.php` with the `action` parameter set to a vulnerable handler such as `rtcl_edit_field_delete`, `rtcl_edit_field_choose`, or `rtcl_save_setting_options`. The request includes malicious JavaScript in parameters like `id`, `type`, or `formData`, depending on the specific action. For example, to exploit the custom field deletion endpoint, the attacker sets `action=rtcl_edit_field_delete` and `id=alert(‘XSS’)`. The plugin passes this payload into the response without proper escaping, resulting in the script executing in the browser of any user who views the affected page. The nonce check in the vulnerable code can be bypassed because the nonce is not required for unauthenticated users, and in some cases the nonce verification logic is flawed (e.g., in `getMediaById`, the check uses `&&` instead of `||`).

Patch Analysis:
The patch adds comprehensive capability checks using `current_user_can(‘manage_rtcl_options’)` before each AJAX action in `AjaxCFG.php` and `AjaxSettings.php`. Nonce verification is now separated from capability checks, ensuring both must pass. Input parameters are sanitized with `absint()` for IDs and `sanitize_text_field()` for text. In `Import.php`, the patch adds JSON parsing of the `rows` parameter with proper error handling, validation of field mappings, and checks to ensure the user has permission to import data. The patch also adds business hours parsing logic (`parse_business_hours_import`) which validates and sanitizes the imported data. The `FormBuilderAjax.php` file adds authorization checks to verify the user owns or can edit the target listing before accepting file uploads. These changes ensure that only authenticated users with the appropriate capabilities can perform these actions, and that all input is sanitized before use.

Impact:
Successful exploitation allows an attacker to inject arbitrary JavaScript into the WordPress site. This can lead to session hijacking, credential theft, defacement of pages, or redirection of users to malicious sites. Since the vulnerability is stored, the injected script persists in the database and executes for every user who visits the affected page, including administrators, potentially leading to full site compromise. Additionally, the attack vector via AJAX handlers does not require any user interaction, making it highly effective for widespread attacks.
